|“||The Lion City may be one of the most peaceful nations in the world, but that doesn't mean it is weak. If you dare to shatter that peace, soon you will face the lion's claws.||”|
Singapore is an island city-state located in Southeast Asia, at the southern tip of the Malaysian Peninsula. It consists of one main island and 62 other islets. Ever since its independence, extensive land reclamation has increased its total size by 23% (130 square kilometres or 50 square miles). The nation is known for its transition from a developing to a developed country in a single generation under the leadership of its founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
The city is open to players at level 50 and is one of the areas in the World Tour expansion.
Before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived at the island, a significant trading settlement existed in Singapore during the 14th century. Legend has it that Sang Nila Utama, its first king, saw what looked like a lion on the island, so he named it SIngapura, meaning, Lion City. He established a royal line until the late 14th century, when its last king, Parameswara, who murdered the previous ruler, was expelled by the Majapahit or the Siamese.
Singapore was ruled by the Malacca Sultanate and then the Johor Sultanate. In 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles arrived on the island and negotiated a treaty which allowed the British to start a trading port there, leading Singapore to be a colony of the British Empire.
In 1942, World War 2 raged, and Singapore was captured and occupied by the Japanese for three years. After the war ended, Singapore reverted to British control, with increasing levels of self-government being granted, culminating in Singapore's merger with the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963. However, social unrest and disputes between Singapore's ruling People's Action Party and Malaysia's Alliance Party resulted in Singapore's expulsion from Malaysia. Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965.
From the late 1960s, Singapore underwent a modernization programme that focused on housing, education, and establishing a manufacturing industry. As of now, it is one of the most prosperous nations, with tourist attractions, shopping centers, and even the honor of hosting the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
