Bikini Bottom (formerly known as "Bikini Gulch," before that as "Dead Eye Gulch," before that as "Bikini Gulch," and before that as "Bikini Bikini Bottomshire") is a submarine city and the main setting of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants. The city normally has a proper of about 538 sea-creatures (and at least one "land-critter"), and consists of various businesses, including restaurants (notably The Krusty Krab and The Chum Bucket), stores, and manufacturers, besides residential areas. In normal circumstances the city has a stable economy, a balanced education system, questionable health care and labor laws, a structured government, and a severe law enforcement system. There are even stadia, amusement parks, and other recreational facilities (such as "Glove World"). Bikini Bottom is home to almost all of the characters in the show.

Fuse discovered that many chemicals in Bikini Bottom, particularly those comprised in the Krabby Patty, could be used to enhance his Fusion Army. Therefore he ordered the entire city and every nearby place to be infected with Fusion Matter.
What the inhabitants didn't realize was that when the ingredients in a Krabby Patty come into contact with Fusion Matter, then those who eat one would morph into Fusions. Since everyone in Bikini Bottom eats Krabby Patties constantly, almost no one was able to escape. (Squidward, however, did, having gotten out of Bikini Bottom before it became infected. Squidward later was found in a frozen state in West City Sewage Plant, though it is unknown as to how he got there.)
It now seems as though not only the town itself, but all the nearby areas, such as the Jellyfish Fields, the Goo Lagoon, the Bikini Bottom Tundra, and even the Flying Dutchman's ship, are heavily infected. For this reason, the only way currently to get to Bikini Bottom is to take the SpongeMarine at Candy Cove. Rock Bottom, however, is mysteriously the only plsce with no Fusions, minions, lairs, or not even a hint of Fusion Matter.
Sandy Cheeks is making heroic attempts to get rid of the Fusion Matter, but she is being hindered by Mr. Krabs, who has tricked Patrick Star into wrecking all her gear, and is using the resultant chaos to turn a profit.
