Avatar Aang, a male Air Nomad, was the Avatar during the century-long conflict known as the Hundred Year War. His immediate predecessor was Avatar Roku, and his immediate successor is Avatar Korra. Aang was the only person in the Avatar world who could use all four bending disciplines: airbending, waterbending, earthbending and firebending. He was also one of a select few Avatars, and one of the first in many years to learn the ancient art of energybending, as well as the only Avatar seen using it.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Aang is the 12-year-old, fun-loving, airbending protagonist of the series. Although averse to fighting, Aang is fiercely protective of his friends, particularly Katara and Appa. He is the current incarnation of the planet's psyche, and is therefore required to act as arbiter among the various people. According to the show's creators, the arrow-like tattoos on his forehead and arms mark Aang as an airbending master, inasmuch as he is the youngest airbender in history to earn them. His mentor was one of the greatest airbenders who had ever lived, Monk Gyatso. Through out the series, Aang develops a crush on Katara. He attempts to tell her so but fails continuously.
Aang is currently located on Wave Island, where Korra is trying to convince him that she is the new avatar, though Aang is having trouble believing it.
